Tungsten electrodes (EWTh-2 according to the AWS classification) consist of a minimum of 97.30 percent tungsten and 1.70 to 2.20 percent of thorium. They are used for durability and ease of use. Thorium increases the quality of electron emission from the electrode, which improves arc ignition and allows for greater current capacitance.

Typical application ranges:

- low and high-alloy steels

- titanium alloys

- nickel alloys

- copper alloys

Welding properties:

- good ignition and re-ignition properties

- not suitable for AC welding

- can be replaced by "grey" or "golden" electrodes

- due to the light radioactivity, they require strict adherence to health and safety recommendations
