What is an OS type welding cable?

The OS1 welding cable is a conductor of electrical energy, which is most often made of copper. Although sometimes aluminum coated with a thin layer of copper can also be found, it is capable of carrying significantly less electrical charge.

It is advisable to connect a special welding cable to the welder, characterized by greater resistance to high loads. Additionally, it is recommended to fully unwind the cable during each welding process. This way, you can avoid overheating and damage.

Types of welding cables

A standard welder requires several welding cables. Regardless of whether the MIG, MAG, MMA coated electrode, or TIG method will be used, you will always need:

  • A leading cable from the welder to the handle. The handle is most often a welding cable OS with a diameter matched appropriately to the power of the welding device.
  • A ground cable. As the name suggests, it is usually responsible for the negative pole. This welding cable is terminated with a connector for the material being welded.
  • Connection assemblies are a variation of welding cables. However, in addition to the cable supplying electrical energy, they also have a wire and gas (argon in the MIG method or carbon dioxide in the MAG method) feeder.

Using the appropriate welding cable guarantees not only a high level of safety but also comfort during the welding process itself.

What to pay attention to when choosing a welding cable?

Are you looking for the right cable for your welder? Contrary to appearances, you may encounter quite a large selection of models, differing in characteristics and parameters. Therefore, it is worth considering in advance what cable you need. What should you pay attention to?

  • The cross-section of the cable. This is a key parameter that determines the maximum current that can be supplied by the welder.
  • The number of cores is usually 1 - a larger number is simply not needed.
  • The rated voltage at which the welding cable should operate is usually 100 V.
  • The material of the outer sheath. Rubber is best suited for this role, providing adequate flexibility and protection against temperature.

When choosing an OS type welding cable, it is worth remembering that its outer diameter will be significantly larger. This will also translate into weight and the amount of space needed for transport.
