Types of FCAW Wires:

  1. Self-shielded wires (FCAW-SS):

These are core wires that contain flux inside, releasing shielding gases during welding to protect the weld.

  • Advantages: greater mobility (no gas cylinder), good performance in outdoor conditions (wind resistance), higher wire deposition efficiency.
  • Applications: welding of carbon and low-alloy steels, in various positions, also outdoors, in windy conditions.

  1. Gas-shielded wires (FCAW-GS):

Require external shielding gas to protect the weld.

  • Advantages: better weld quality (compared to some self-shielded wires), ability to more precisely control the shielding gas.
  • Applications: welding of carbon and alloy steels, in various positions, in conditions where high weld quality is required.

  1. Additional classification criteria:
  • Type of flux:

Rutile, metallic, etc.

  1. Chemical composition of self-shielded wire:

Wires with different chemical compositions are intended for welding different materials (e.g., carbon steels, stainless steels).

  1. Wire diameter:

The choice of diameter depends on the thickness of the material being welded and the required efficiency. The most commonly encountered diameter is 0.9mm. (It should be noted that it is necessary to use an R-type roller in the wire feeder and to change the polarity in the welding machine – not all semi-automatics have this function).

  1. Purpose:

For welding in various positions, for steels of different thicknesses, for automatic or semi-automatic welding.

  1. Examples of FCAW wire designations:
  • SG2: Very versatile wire for carbon steels.
  • SG3: Contains more silicon and manganese, which provides higher weld strength.
  • G3Si1: Designation according to AWS, where G3 means 3% manganese, and Si1 means 1% silicon.

Important: The choice of the appropriate FCAW wire depends on many factors, including the type of material being welded, the required weld quality, the welding position, and working conditions.

FCAW arc welding is popular due to its versatility. The process is easier to master than MIG/MAG, and the resulting welds are highly durable and aesthetic. It is an ideal compromise between MMA and MIG/MAG welding.

Using self-shielded wire is a good solution for all types of assemblies in outdoor conditions.
